National Recovery Month Celebration
On September 26th, the Santa Cruz County Substance Use Disorder Commission is holding its local
Recovery Month Celebration at the Mid-County Senior Center. Recovery Month, now in its 30th year
nationally, highlights the achievements of individuals who have reclaimed their lives in recovering from
substance use disorders, and honors the prevention and treatment services of the providers who make
recovery achievable. The following awards will be given to recognize outstanding contributions in the areas
of prevention, treatment, or recovery in Santa Cruz County:
Robert E. Neff Award: Community members who have demonstrated excellence in service to the recovering
community as demonstrated through a commitment to carry the message that recovery is possible.
Bill Manov Award: Professionals in the field of substance use disorder services who have demonstrated a
history of service, dedication and outstanding contributions to the field in prevention, treatment, or recovery.
All are welcome and invited to attend this free Recovery Month Celebration, which will feature information
booths, speakers, awards, raffle prizes, and free refreshments. Supervisor John Leopold, Sheriff Jim Hart, and
Chief of Substance Use Disorder Services Shaina Zurlin will be speaking and giving updates on the topic of
substance use disorder and recovery support services in Santa Cruz County. Recovery Month is wonderful
opportunity to come together and learn about this medical condition and how it impacts our community.
“Hearing individual success stories and becoming more informed about the challenges for treatment providers
can initiate compassionate action and positively affect the lives of others as well as your own,” said Colleen
McMahon-Sepulveda, Chair of the Substance Use Disorder Commission.
