"What is Nature?" with Charles Hood (Pack a lunch!)
Join poet, nature guide, and author Charles Hood for a spirited overview of ten ways to define and enjoy the natural world! Along the way, he will review the history of field guides, talk about changing definitions of species, and discuss the enduring influence of literature on the sciences. Charles is the author of A Californian’s Guide to the Birds Among Us (Heyday Books) and is finishing two new books, one on mammals and one on the urban nature of Los Angeles. The recipient of multiple writing awards, he also has seen 5,000 species of birds in the wild, and among other things, has been charged by a musk ox, been lost in a whiteout in Tibet, and has contracted (and survived) bubonic plague. He lives and teaches in the Mojave Desert and is a Research Fellow at the Center for Art + Environment at the Nevada Museum of Art. The talk is free and starts at noon — pack a lunch!!
