Science Sunday! J. Xavier Prochaska on Gravitational Waves!

Monday, October 15, 2018, 2:00 AM

Presenting the second installment of "Science Sundays at the Lab!" (SSL) where once a month, a local scientist presents on his or her favorite research topic (beer in hand not mandatory*) On October 14th we'll host UC Santa Cruz professor of astronomy and astrophysics, J. Xavier Prochaska, who will talk about "Gravitational Waves: The Next Big Thing in Astrophysics." Other series speakers include: Sept 9 - CSUMB's Daniel Fernandez asks, "What the Heck is Entropy?" Nov. 18 - Monterey Institute for Research in Astronomy's Bruce Weaver, who will ask, "How Do Astronomers Know That? Dec. 9 - CSUMB Professor and Visual Artist EnidBaxter Ryce investigates "Atmospheric Rivers: How Did We Forget About Them?" And fear not -- these talks are geared towards students, adults, and even those of us who were English majors! No cover (though donations accepted). Beer and wine available for purchase. Predicted by Einstein ~100 years ago, gravitational waves are a complementary form of energy to ordinary light. These waves have recently been detected by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) located in Louisiana and Washington state. Professor Prochaska will review the basic concepts of gravitational waves, their detection, and their implications for researching black holes and neutron stars in our nearby universe. About J. Xavier Prochaska Prochaska earned his B.S. in physics at Princeton University and M.S. and Ph.D. in physics at UC San Diego. He was a Carnegie Fellow and a Hubble Fellow at the Carnegie Observatories in Pasadena before joining the faculty at UC Santa Cruz in 2002. He received the 2016-17 Outstanding Faculty Award from the Division of Physical and Biological Sciences. The annual award is the division's highest honor for faculty achievement, recognizing combined excellence in research, teaching, and service.
